The North Church Buckie

The North Church sits on a ridge above Buckie's harbour, a solid Victorian kirk that catches you off guard with its sheer presence. Built in 1843, it's all red sandstone and proper Gothic detail - the kind of building that makes you realise how seriously the fishing community took their Sunday worship.

Inside, the organ dominates. It's genuinely impressive if you care about that sort of thing, and the plasterwork overhead has aged beautifully. The light through those tall windows frames the Moray coast beyond. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes to have a proper look around, longer if you sit in the pews and soak in the atmosphere.

It's not a destination in itself - you wouldn't drive hours for this alone. But if you're staying at Greencraig Pods just up the road, or exploring Buckie as a working fishing port (which you should), then stepping inside makes sense. The building tells you something real about what mattered to people here a century and a half ago, which beats most tourist attractions hands down.

Free to enter, though you might leave a donation. Best visited on a quiet weekday morning when you've got the place to yourself. The town itself is worth an hour or two - proper working harbour, decent fish and chips, nothing twee about it.
