The Museum in the Park

Free entry to a proper local museum tucked into Stratford Park on the edge of Stroud - that alone makes it worth a look if you're camping in the area. The building itself is a Victorian mansion, and inside you'll find the usual regional fare: Roman finds, local history, textile displays that actually tell you something about Gloucestershire's wool trade. Nothing flashy, but genuinely well done.

You're looking at an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're thorough. Families with younger kids might stretch it to two hours - there's a small play area and the grounds themselves are lovely for a wander afterwards. Older kids and anyone interested in social history will find more to grip them than casual visitors. The textile collection is strong, which makes sense given Stroud's industrial past.

Tuesdays to Fridays it opens at ten, weekends from eleven, but it's shut Mondays - worth checking before you drive over. Free admission means you can pop in without committing your entire afternoon, which is the right approach really.

The real value is the location. You're right there in Stratford Park, so combine it with a proper walk round the grounds, then head into Stroud for lunch. If you're staying at Middle Lypiatt Glamping or any of the nearby campsites, it's close enough for a rainy-day option without feeling like a chore. Don't expect jaw-dropping revelations, but it's solid local stuff done with care.
