The Mounts

The Mounts is essentially Wokingham's answer to a proper viewpoint, though calling it a 'peak' is generous. It's a modest hill that rises out of the Surrey/Berkshire borderlands, and from the top you get sight lines across the Home Counties that stretch further than you'd expect from somewhere so close to suburbia.

What draws people here is the walk itself as much as the destination. The climb takes about fifteen minutes from the car park, and it's gentle enough that families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's a bit of scramble near the summit. On a clear day the views justify the effort - you can pick out distant woodland and the kind of rolling green that makes you remember why anyone bothers living down south.

The spot works best on a quiet morning or early evening when Wokingham's sprawl feels further away than it actually is. Bring a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it, though the lack of facilities means you won't want to linger for hours. It's free to visit, and parking is straightforward.

If you're staying at California Chalet & Touring Park six miles out, The Mounts makes for a decent half-day outing - close enough not to eat up precious holiday time, but far enough removed from the caravan site routine. It won't keep you entertained for a full day, but as a break in the routine it's entirely worth the short drive.
