The Mountain Lake

The Mountain Lake sits high up on the slopes above Castlewellan, a proper retreat if you're after a bit of peace away from the main tourist drag. It's a modest body of water - don't expect vast vistas - but there's something about the walk up that makes it worthwhile. The lake itself reflects the surrounding hills and moorland, and on a clear day you get a genuine sense of being removed from everyday noise.

Walkers will find it a decent outing, particularly if you're combining it with the broader trail network around the Mourne area. The gradient isn't brutal but it's steady enough that you'll feel you've earned the view. Families with older kids handle it fine; younger ones might find it a bit of a slog depending on their legs.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks strung around Castlewellan - Pine Tree Hollow is closest at just a couple of miles, though Windsor and the others offer more traditional park facilities - it makes a logical afternoon excursion. Allow a good two hours there and back, longer if you're inclined to loaf about with a thermos.

There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so come prepared: bring water, wear proper boots, and check the weather forecast. Castlewellan itself has tea shops and shops for supplies. The lake rewards you less for dramatic scenery and more for the quiet walk and the knowledge you've climbed to somewhere that doesn't feel touristy. If you want something more dramatic, the Mournes proper are nearby - but this works well as a lower-key addition to your itinerary.
