The Mount

A steep earthwork rising abruptly from the Gloucestershire landscape, The Mount is one of those places that stops you mid-walk. It's an Iron Age hill fort, though you won't find manicured paths or interpretive boards - just a proper climb up grass-covered ramparts with views that stretch across the county once you're up top.

The site sits near Gloucester, and reaching the summit takes about ten minutes of solid leg work. Families with younger kids might find it a bit of a slog for the payoff - there's nothing interactive, and the view only really impresses if you care about Iron Age settlement patterns. Serious walkers, though, love it. It fits naturally into countryside rambles in the area.
