The Mount

The Mount sits just outside Braintree, a proper Iron Age hillfort that's been here for over two thousand years. It's a straightforward archaeological site - you're looking at earthwork ramparts and ditches that make up the fort's defensive structure, rather than ruins or buildings. The views from the top are decent enough, and on a clear day you can see across Essex countryside that's largely unchanged since Roman times.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from this one. If you're not interested in Iron Age settlement patterns or Romano-British transitions, you'll have done the walk and understood it all within thirty minutes. The site itself is genuinely quiet - you won't be jostling for space or navigating crowds, which is either brilliant or a bit lonely depending on your mood.

Walkers will appreciate the approach, and it makes a decent morning excursion if you're staying at Hill Farm campsite nearby. The area's reasonably accessible, though bring proper footwear if it's been wet - the ramparts can get muddy. There's no café or facilities on-site, so sort yourself out before you arrive.

The real value here is context. If you're exploring Roman Essex and want to see where the Iron Age settlement stood before the occupation, this fills that gap. As a standalone visit, it's a bit thin. But as part of a wider archaeological walk through the region, it's worth the detour from Braintree.
