The Moon Inn (site of)

There's not much to see at the Moon Inn site these days - just a field near Alton where archaeologists uncovered the remains of a medieval inn. The dig revealed foundations, pottery, and evidence of what was once a proper working tavern, probably serving travellers on the old routes through Hampshire. If you're into archaeology or medieval history, it's worth knowing about, but you won't find signage or visitor facilities here. This isn't a heritage centre with a café and gift shop.

The real value is context. Walk the grounds and you get a sense of how settlements grew around stopping points for merchants and pilgrims. It's the kind of site that appeals to local history buffs and families doing a bit of detective work on foot rather than the casual Sunday visitor. Allow an hour if you're genuinely interested, less if you're just passing through.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Wigwam Holidays is closest at under three miles, or try Hampshire Hills or Feather Down Manor Farm for more space - this works as a quiet historical detour between proper attractions.
