The Meads

Walk into The Meads and you're immediately struck by how quiet it is. This nature reserve near Bridgwater spreads across wetland and grassland that genuinely feels removed from the everyday - no gift shop, no visitor centre, just water, reeds, and the sound of birds. It's the sort of place where you actually spot things: dragonflies in summer, overwintering wildfowl in winter, occasional raptors if you're lucky and patient. The walking trails wind through different habitats, and you can spend anywhere from an hour to a half-day here depending on how seriously you take the birdwatching. Bring binoculars or you'll regret it.

This works best for nature enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual strollers with small children. The terrain's flat and manageable, but there's not much to entertain kids who aren't into wildlife. Autumn and spring are the standout seasons when migration brings rarer birds through. Summer can be buggy, particularly around dusk.
