The Manor, Hemingford Grey

The Manor at Hemingford Grey is one of England's oldest continuously inhabited houses, a genuine medieval structure that's been lived in since around 1130. You can't miss the creeping wisteria and climbing roses that smother the frontage - they're doing what they've done for decades, softening what would otherwise be a rather austere brick exterior.

The house itself is modest by stately-home standards, which is partly why it works so well. You get the sense of actual domesticity rather than grand theatre. Inside, the rooms are low-ceilinged and intimate, filled with the kind of furniture and possessions that suggest real people have always lived here. There's a moat, too - one of the few remaining in the country - which adds a layer of medieval atmosphere that photographs struggle to capture.

Visitors tend to fall into two camps: keen historians who'll spend a solid hour picking over the architectural details and asking the resident owner endless questions, and families with young children who'll manage perhaps thirty minutes before the kids start asking when lunch is. Walkers often combine it with a stroll along the Great Ouse, which runs nearby and connects Hemingford Grey to Huntingdon.

Admission requires arranging a visit - it's not a full-time public attraction, which keeps the experience feel intimate rather than touristy. Spring and early summer are the best times, when the gardens are at their peak. Several caravan parks sit within walking distance, including Quiet Waters just 0.4 miles away, making this a logical addition to a Cambridgeshire park holiday rather than a destination in itself.
