The Loth Stone

The Loth Stone sits on farmland near Dunbar, a weathered slab of rock that's been standing roughly where it is for thousands of years. It's not much to look at - a chunk of stone about waist-high, covered in lichen - but that's rather the point. This is Bronze Age stuff, put here by people whose names we'll never know, and it's still here.

You won't find crowds or café facilities. What you get is a short walk through proper countryside, the kind where you might see more sheep than people, and a moment standing in front of something genuinely old. Walkers and archaeology types will find it worthwhile; younger kids might lose interest faster than you'd hope. The lack of interpretation boards means you're bringing your own context, which some will find atmospheric and others frustrating.

There's no formal admission or visitor facilities that we can pin down - it's just accessible, which is often the best way these things work. Allow half an hour if you're making a dedicated trip, though realistically you'd combine it with a wider walk around the area. Dunbar itself has enough history and coastal scenery to make a proper afternoon of it.

If you're basing yourself at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park, this is a reasonable detour - close enough for a morning excursion without eating up your whole day. Worth the effort if ancient monuments genuinely interest you. Less so if you need interpretation or Instagram moments.
