The Ballast Hole is a proper slice of Cambridgeshire's industrial past turned leisure spot. What you're looking at is a flooded gravel pit near Huntingdon - the kind of place that could be forgettable, except it genuinely works as a walk destination. The lake sits shallow and wide, fringed by woodland that's actually pleasant to move through, and the water reflects sky in that particular way that makes you stop and look twice.

Walkers get the most from it. There's a circuit you can do without any faffing about, and it's flat enough that you won't arrive at Huntingdon knackered. Bird watchers turn up regularly - you'll see Canada geese and the usual waterside suspects without needing expensive optics. Families with younger kids will find an hour here fills a gap between bigger attractions, though there's not much to actually do except walk and watch.

What makes it work is proximity to Long Island Lake, just two miles away. Pair them together and you've got a decent morning's outing - you're not paying entry fees or wrestling with car parks. The area around Huntingdon isn't dramatic, but that's rather the point. It's genuine countryside without the postcard pressure.

Go on a quieter weekday if you can. Weekends bring dog walkers and you'll share the path. The light's best mid-morning, and if it's rained hard, watch for muddy stretches. Allow ninety minutes maximum. It's not going to blow your mind, but it's well worth the detour if you're staying nearby.
