The Lake

Water sits dead still on most days, reflecting whatever sky decides to show up. The Lake in Northamptonshire is straightforward - a proper body of water that rewards a quiet walk rather than demanding anything theatrical from you. You'll find people fishing along the banks, families chucking bread at ducks (though the ducks would probably prefer proper seed), and the occasional heron standing absolutely motionless, waiting for breakfast to swim past.

It's the kind of place that works best if you're staying at one of the caravan parks nearby - New Lodge Farm Bulwick or Brightside are both within two miles, making this an easy morning potter before lunch. Walkers get the most from it; there's a decent circuit if you've got the time, and the ground's usually manageable even after rain. Kids will manage an hour, perhaps ninety minutes if you're lucky and there's wildlife activity. Birdwatchers, though, could spend half a day here without complaint.

Nearest town is Peterborough, which sits about fifteen miles south. The lake itself is free to visit - you just turn up - and there's no specific visiting hours that I'm aware of, so you've got flexibility. It's not flashy or dramatic, but that's rather the point. Go if you want to slow down. Don't go if you're after theme park energy. The water's been here for ages and it'll still be here tomorrow.
