About The Knock
The walk takes around 45 minutes up and back, with a well-trodden path that's muddy after rain but never technical. You'll pass through mixed woodland before breaking out onto open moorland, where the landscape opens up dramatically. On a clear day you can see the Cairngorms rising to the west, and the valley floor spreading out below feels properly remote, even though Ballater's essentially at your feet.
It's tailor-made for walkers wanting something quick and satisfying without committing to a full day expedition. Families with reasonably fit kids aged eight-plus will manage fine, though don't expect them to linger at the top - there's nothing there except the view and the wind. History buffs won't find much, but landscape photographers will have a field day, especially in autumn when the forest changes colour.
Free to access, obviously. Go on a weekday morning if you can - weekends bring out the Ballater day-trippers. Either of the nearby caravan parks makes a sensible base for exploring the area. The Knock works brilliantly as a morning session before heading elsewhere in Deeside.
