The Knapp and Papermill nature reserve

The Knapp and Papermill reserve sits just outside Worcester and feels like proper countryside - the sort of place locals know about but visitors often miss. It's a working nature reserve run by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, spread across woodland, meadow and riverside habitat where the Bow Brook runs through. You'll find walking trails that wind past old coppice woodland and open grassland where wildflowers take over in spring and summer. The best bit is how varied it is for a relatively small site. Bird watchers come for the typical woodland species and the occasional rarity; walkers appreciate the gentle paths that won't take more than an hour or two to explore properly; families with younger kids won't feel overwhelmed by distance.

Go in May or June if you can. The bluebells and later wildflowers transform the meadow into something worth making a trip for. Early morning visits mean you'll see more wildlife and dodge the weekend crowds. Access appears to be free, though these reserves depend on donations to keep going, so worth chucking something in the box if there is one.

It pairs well with a holiday at one of the nearby parks - Hop Pickers Rural Retreats is only a mile or so down the road, making this a decent walk from your accommodation if you're staying there. Otherwise it's a short drive from Worcester itself, so you could combine it with exploring the cathedral city and its riverside. Not a full-day destination, but a proper addition to a park holiday in Herefordshire.
