The King's Spy Oak

An ancient oak tree standing in the Oxfordshire countryside near Henley-on-Thames, the King's Spy Oak carries a wonderfully dubious historical claim - that King Charles II once hid within its hollow trunk while fleeing Cromwell's forces during the English Civil War. Whether that's actually true hardly matters when you're standing in front of something this old and gnarled.

The tree itself is the real attraction here. It's massive, characterful, and genuinely feels like it's been watching the landscape change for centuries. You can walk right up to it, run your hands over the bark if you fancy, and soak in that peculiar feeling of touching something that predates the modern world entirely.
