The Jungle Zoo

The Jungle Zoo sits just inland from Cleethorpes, a modest collection of big cats, primates and exotic birds spread across a converted country estate. It's the sort of place where you can actually see the animals rather than squint at them across a savanna - the enclosures are close and intimate, which kids either love or find slightly unsettling depending on their age.

You're looking at two to three hours maximum here. The big draw is the big cats - tigers, leopards, that sort of thing - plus a decent monkey section and various bird aviaries. It's not London Zoo, but it's also not trying to be. What it does is give families with young children a proper hands-on animal experience without the crowds or the walking your feet off.

If you're staying at Haven Cleethorpes Beach Holiday Park, it's practically on your doorstep - a mile or so inland. Good for a morning out while the tide's out, or an afternoon break if the beach weather turns. Admission is paid entry, though prices change seasonally, so check ahead. Summer months are rammed; better to go early morning or mid-week if you can.

Truthfully, older kids and serious wildlife enthusiasts might find it a touch too small. But for under-tens and anyone wanting a gentle alternative to theme parks, it does the job without fuss. The animals look well-kept, and the staff actually know their stuff - proper zoo folk, not just turnstile watchers.
