The Heugh

The Heugh is a proper woodland walk just outside Musselburgh, the kind of place locals know well but visitors often miss. It's a forested ravine with a burn running through it - nothing dramatic, but the trees are tall enough that you forget you're on the outskirts of a town. The paths wind through beech and oak, and there are a few open glades where the light filters through nicely.

This is walkers' territory, really. Not strenuous, just a gentle ramble where you can actually hear yourself think. It takes about an hour to cover the main loop without rushing, longer if you're the type who stops to look at bark or listen for birds. Families with younger kids will find it manageable, though it can get muddy after rain - proper footwear matters.

If you're staying at Haven Seton Sands just down the road, The Heugh makes for a useful half-morning outing when the weather's reasonable. It's free, no fees or booking nonsense. The woodland itself isn't unusual - you get this all over Lothian - but it's close enough to base yourself comfortably and it breaks up a park holiday without eating a whole day. Best visited on a weekday if you want any solitude. Worth knowing about, though not worth going out of your way for if you're not staying nearby.
