The Hands is a contemporary art gallery in Glenrothes that punches well above its weight. The building itself is striking - all clean lines and purpose-built spaces that take you seriously as a visitor rather than shuffling you through a gift shop on the way out.

I spent a good couple of hours there without feeling rushed, though you could easily do it in 45 minutes if you're time-pressed. The gallery's thoughtfully laid out and the staff know their stuff - they'll chat about the work if you ask, which beats the usual gallery silence.

It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone with genuine interest in contemporary art, though families with older teenagers won't find it stuffy. Young kids might get restless. The real win is that it's free entry, which makes it a proper bargain.

For a caravan holiday in the area, it's well worth slotting in. Kingdom Caravan Park is just up the road - less than two miles - and Balbirnie sits even closer. If you're based at Wild Goose Glamping, you're about twenty minutes away. Glenrothes itself is fairly functional as towns go, but having this space here means you're not entirely reliant on bigger centres like Edinburgh or Perth for culture. Best to ring ahead about opening hours and any current exhibitions - they do close between shows sometimes.
