The Gullet

The Gullet is a proper woodland walk tucked away near Maidenhead, the sort of place locals know about but tourists often miss. It's a narrow, wooded valley that cuts through the landscape with steep sides covered in beech and oak - genuinely atmospheric on a damp autumn afternoon. The path winds through the trees, with a small stream running alongside, and the whole thing feels like stepping into a different world despite being minutes from suburban commuter belt.

Walkers will absolutely get the most out of this. It's not a destination in itself - you won't spend hours here - but as part of a longer ramble around the area it works really well. The walk itself takes perhaps 45 minutes to an hour depending on which direction you go and whether you're the sort to dawdle. The gradient is manageable rather than gruelling, though it does get muddy after rain.

If you're staying at any of the riverside parks nearby - Hurleyford Farm is closest at under 4 miles, or Hurley Riverside Park at 4.5 miles - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing. It's the kind of place that clears your head without demanding much effort. Don't expect dramatic views or facilities; bring decent boots and dress for the weather. The real appeal is how quickly you can feel genuinely away from it all when you're surrounded by that many trees.
