The Great Tower

The Great Tower stands as Dover's most imposing medieval landmark, a solid Norman keep that dominates the town's skyline and serves as the heart of Dover Castle itself. Built in the 12th century, this fortress-like structure is genuinely impressive from the outside - all flint walls and architectural muscle. You can walk around the grounds and take in the views across the Channel, which on a clear day stretch all the way to France.

Inside, the tower tells the story of Dover's strategic importance through centuries of warfare and defence. Climbing the spiral staircase is a proper workout - steep, narrow, and genuinely medieval - but it rewards you with panoramic views from the top. The keep's different levels showcase period rooms and displays explaining how soldiers and nobility lived within these walls.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will get the most from a visit here. Kids under eight might find the endless stairs tedious, but older children usually engage with the castle setting and the sheer sense of standing inside something genuinely ancient. Plan for two to three hours minimum to do it justice, longer if you're exploring the wider castle grounds.

Dover Castle charges admission and operates year-round, though hours vary seasonally - check ahead before visiting.
