The Grange

The Grange is a proper working nature reserve tucked into Worcestershire countryside, about twenty minutes from Cheltenham. It's the sort of place where you actually see things - I spotted three different bird species within the first ten minutes of wandering the paths, and the wildflower meadows are genuinely impressive come spring and summer.

What you're doing here is walking. There's no visitor centre or café, which means it feels refreshingly uncommercial. The trails loop through woodland and open ground, taking anywhere from half an hour to two hours depending on which way you go. Birdwatchers will love it - the reserve is properly managed for wildlife, so you get genuine habitat work, not just a field left to chance.

Historically minded folk will appreciate that it's an old estate with real ecological restoration happening. You see what conservation actually looks like when it's done properly.

It works well alongside the nearby caravan sites. Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club is less than five miles away, and Croft Farm Water Park a bit further - so you can base yourself there and spend a morning here without it feeling like a major expedition. The walking is easy enough for families, though there's not much to stop younger kids getting bored if they're not already into nature. Bring binoculars. Go early to avoid the school groups during term time. Best visited in warmer months when the wildlife is actually active.
