The Grange

A mile outside Alresford, you'll find the hollow shell of what was once one of England's grandest country houses. The Grange is a neoclassical mansion reduced to its bare bones - four walls, a colonnade, and acres of overgrown gardens where nature has largely reclaimed the upper hand. English Heritage maintains it, and the admission is free, which feels generous given how atmospheric the place is.

What strikes you immediately is the sheer scale. Built in 1809 by Henry Drummond, a banker with more money than sense, it was designed to showcase his wealth through architecture. The columned front is still imposing, even in decay. Walk inside and you're moving through empty rooms open to the sky - it's quietly eerie rather than depressing. The gardens spread out around it, with older trees and overgrown paths that reward a bit of poking about. Spend an hour here, maybe two if the weather's decent and you're into wandering.

This appeals most to architecture enthusiasts and history types who find ruins more interesting than pristine restorations. Families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's little to actually do beyond looking and walking. The village of Alresford itself is worth combining this with; it's got decent pubs and shops.

If you're staying at The Spinney Caravan Park or Hampshire Hills, both within a few miles, The Grange makes for a solid morning detour. Don't expect manicured gardens or guided tours - it's the emptiness and the why-was-this-built-then-abandoned story that makes it worth the visit.
