The Gloup

The Gloup is a proper sea cave on the north coast near Thurso, where the Atlantic has carved a dramatic chasm into the cliffs over thousands of years. You walk across moorland to reach it, and the final approach involves scrambling down rough terrain to peer into this dark, moaning cavern where waves crash and echo through the rock.

It's the kind of place that feels genuinely wild - no safety railings, no café, just you and the geology. The cave itself is accessed from above rather than at sea level, which means you're looking down into it rather than exploring inside, unless you're prepared for some technical climbing or kayaking. Most visitors come for the views and the drama of the setting rather than extended time inside.

Walkers and geology enthusiasts will find this worth the drive from Thurso. It's not a place to bring small children unless they're steady on their feet - the approach is uneven and there are genuine drop-offs. Allow an hour for the walk there and back, maybe longer if you want to sit and soak in the bleakness of the landscape.

It works well as part of a wider exploration of the north Highland coast. If you're based at Little Croft Highlands a few miles south, this is the sort of natural oddity that makes the area special - raw, windswept, and properly atmospheric.
