The Gliding Heritage Centre

If you've ever watched a glider silently slip across the sky and wondered how on earth it stays up there, the Gliding Heritage Centre near Alton is where you'll get proper answers. It's a small museum dedicated to the history and mechanics of gliding - the sport that relies on nothing but thermals, ridge lift, and an awful lot of nerve.

You'll find restored aircraft, detailed exhibits about how gliding developed as both sport and engineering challenge, and usually someone enthusiastic enough to explain the difference between a Schweizer and a Schleicher without making your eyes glaze over. It's not enormous - you can see everything in under two hours - but it rewards anyone genuinely curious about aviation history or the physics of unpowered flight.

Families with kids aged eight upwards tend to get the most from it, especially if there's a budding engineer in the group. Adults fascinated by mid-20th century aviation will find plenty to chew on. Parents of very young children might find it a bit specialist for their needs.

It works well as a morning or early afternoon stop when you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks - Feather Down Manor Farm or Wigwam Holidays are both close by. The countryside around Alton is pleasant for walking, so you could easily combine a visit with a decent ramble. Given how niche the subject is, it's worth checking opening hours before you make the trip, as smaller heritage attractions sometimes close midweek during quieter seasons.
