The Glebe

The Glebe is a modest nature reserve just outside Dunbar that surprises you with how much it packs into a relatively small space. Woodland paths weave through a mix of mature trees and open grassland where you'll spot everything from common birds to the occasional roe deer if you're quiet enough. The reserve sits on what was once glebe land - church property, hence the name - and that history still feels present in the way the landscape has been left relatively untouched.

It's ideal for walkers wanting something low-key rather than challenging. An hour's amble covers the main paths comfortably, though you could stretch it to two if you're the type to pause and listen. Families with younger kids will manage it fine, though there's nothing specifically laid on to keep them entertained beyond "spot the birds and squirrels." Serious birdwatchers will find it worthwhile, especially during migration seasons when you get some unexpected visitors.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need. Dunbar itself is right there - proper East Lothian harbour town with chip shops and cafes - so it works well as a half-morning stop before heading elsewhere. If you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park nearby, it's frankly perfect: close enough for a gentle walk without commitment, far enough from the site to feel like an actual outing. Not dramatic, but honest and worth the short detour.
