The Field dog walk

The Field near Lochwinnoch is a straightforward nature reserve where you can walk your dog without the usual lead restrictions that plague so many Scottish spots. It's essentially open grassland with woodland edges - nothing dramatic, but perfectly adequate for getting the mutt some proper exercise away from the village itself.

The walking here is dead easy. You're looking at gentle terrain, no steep climbs, and enough space that dogs can actually have a run without terrorising sheep or annoying other visitors. The paths are well-trodden but not fussy about it. Most visits work best in under an hour, though keen walkers could stretch it if they wanted to explore the woodland fringes properly.

Lochwinnoch itself sits right on the edge of several decent parks - The Pods at Auchenhean is barely three miles away and offers a proper base if you're planning a longer dog-friendly break in the area. The Field works best as a morning run-around before heading elsewhere, rather than a full day's outing. It's the kind of place you'd squeeze in before lunch, not plan a pilgrimage around.

Best visited when it's not sodden, which in Renfrewshire means being realistic about timing. Bring a towel for muddy paws. No frills, no facilities that I could find, but functional and free - which is exactly what most dog owners want from a walk.
