The Dalmunach Distillery

You'll drive past the modern copper stills before you even reach the car park at Dalmunach - they're impossible to miss, gleaming against the Aberdeenshire landscape just outside Keith. This is one of Scotland's newer distilleries, having only opened in 2014, but it's built on the back of serious whisky pedigree; the site itself dates back much further in the region's distilling story.

The distillery tour walks you through the production process from grain to glass, and it's genuinely hands-on rather than theatre. You'll see the mashing, fermentation, and distillation happening in real time if you time it right. The visitor centre is functional rather than flashy - all exposed stone and stainless steel - which somehow makes it feel more authentic than some of the tourist-heavy operations elsewhere.

Allot two to three hours if you're doing a tour and tasting. It's worth doing both; the new-make spirit tastes nothing like the finished whisky, and the guides explain why better than most. Not cheap, mind, but you get proper measures and access to some experimental releases you won't find in shops. Families with teenagers will get something out of it; younger kids will struggle with the technical detail.

If you're staying at Hillside Havens - just five miles away - it makes an easy half-day excursion. The surrounding countryside is classic Speyside rolling farmland, so pair it with a walk or a visit to another distillery nearby. Keith itself is quiet but has decent pubs for lunch.
