A decent contemporary art space that takes itself seriously without the pretension you'd find in London galleries. The Contemporary Art Gallery pulls in rotating exhibitions of modern and contemporary work - paintings, installations, the occasional video piece - and it's the kind of place where you might actually spend longer than you expected. Located near Pevensey, it's a solid stop if you're base-camping at Pevensey Bay Holiday Park and fancy an afternoon away from the caravans.

The space itself is modest but well-run. Staff know what they're talking about, and there's none of that gallery-world stuffiness that makes normal people feel thick for not understanding a blank canvas. Opening times and admission details weren't readily available when I checked, so phone ahead before you make the trip - nothing worse than turning up to find it's closed Mondays or charges a tenner entry. Most contemporary galleries are either free or a fiver, so assume similar.

Who'll get most from it? Honestly, art enthusiasts and anyone who wants something cerebral for a couple of hours. Kids might find it dull unless the current show is particularly visual. If you're staying at Warren Wood Country Park or Normans Bay, it's easily manageable as part of a wider day out - combine it with a coastal walk from Pevensey or a poke around the village itself.

Worth a visit if art matters to you and you're already in the area. Don't make a special trip from miles away just for this one, but as a gallery experience near the coast, it does its job properly.
