The Cloch

The Cloch is a proper Stone Age monument that sits on a hillside just outside Montrose, commanding views across Aberdeenshire that'll make you forget you're standing next to a relatively modest pile of rocks. It's a recumbent stone circle - meaning the largest stone lies flat on its back - and dates back some 4,500 years, which frankly is the sort of thing that makes your brain hurt a bit.

What you get is the circle itself, a handful of upright stones arranged in that distinctive recumbent pattern, set on decent walking ground. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no interpretive panels telling you what to think. Just the stones, the wind, and your own imagination. That's either brilliant or frustrating depending on your mood.

Historically minded folk will find this genuinely interesting - these circles were gathering places, burial sites maybe, ceremonial centres. The walk up rewards you with proper Highland views, and it's manageable for families with kids who can manage a bit of rough ground. Fifteen minutes to have a look around is realistic; longer if you're the contemplative type or you've brought binoculars for the view.

If you're staying at St Cyrus Holiday Park just down the road, it's absolutely worth the short trip. Montrose itself is close enough for supplies and a decent meal. Go early or late in the day when the light's better and you might have the place entirely to yourself. That's when these old stones really speak.
