The Cathedral Oak

You're standing in front of a tree that's been here since before Columbus set sail. The Cathedral Oak near Pewsey is properly ancient - we're talking 900 years old, possibly more - and it's the kind of thing that makes you feel small in the best way possible. The trunk is vast, gnarled, utterly magnificent. What strikes you most is the sheer presence of it; this isn't some manicured heritage site with a gift shop. It's just a tree, free to visit, asking nothing of you but respect and a bit of imagination.

The tree sits quietly in the Wiltshire landscape, and that's exactly why it works. You can walk right up to it, touch the bark if you're so inclined, and spend as long as you like just standing there thinking about everything that's happened during its lifetime. Medieval knights rode past. Tudors ruled. Industrial revolutions came and went. This oak watched it all.

It's worth a detour if you're based at one of the local camping spots - Totteridge Farm or Ridgeway Campsite are both close enough that you could visit en route to something else. Allow 20 minutes to half an hour, longer if you're the contemplative type. Families with young kids will get a kick out of the sheer age of it, though they might not linger. History enthusiasts and walkers tackling the Wiltshire ridges will find it genuinely moving. Winter visits are atmospheric. Summer's lovely too, but you'll want to come early to avoid the midday heat bouncing off the chalk.

No facilities, no entrance fee. Just you and a very old tree.
