The Canch

The Canch is a proper little nature reserve just outside Worksop, the kind of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely. It's a working wetland - think shallow pools, reed beds, and rough grassland rather than manicured gardens. Birdwatchers will have the best of it here, especially in spring and autumn when migrants pass through. I counted herons, lapwings, and various warblers on a quiet morning, though you'll need decent binoculars and patience to see them properly.

The reserve is free to wander, and most people allow between one and two hours depending on how seriously they're taking the birdwatching. There are informal paths that loop around the water, though they're not always obvious - it helps to have a map from the visitor centre if there is one open. It's not dramatic scenery, but it's genuinely wild in a way that feels quite rare in Nottinghamshire.

For families, honestly, it depends entirely on the children. Keen young naturalists will be fascinated. Those after dramatic vistas or playground facilities will find it rather dull. Walkers will appreciate it as a quieter alternative to the busier spots nearby.

Stay at Riverside Caravan Park just down the road and you're ideally placed to explore both The Canch and the much larger National Trust - Clumber Park across the way. The latter's more developed if you need structured attractions, but The Canch rewards a slower, more observant approach.
