The Canal

The Canal in Warwickshire is one of those waterways that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick visit. It's the sort of place where you'll actually see people fishing, narrowboats moving at a pace that makes modern life look frantic, and the occasional heron doing absolutely nothing for twenty minutes. The towpath is dead easy to walk - flat, well-maintained, and you can cover as much or as little as you fancy depending on energy levels and how hypnotised the kids have become by canal life.

Historically it's worth knowing about. This stretch of water has been moving goods and people for centuries, and you can still feel that purpose when you watch a boat navigate the locks. It's not a theme park or an attraction with opening hours and entry fees - it's more a slice of working England that happens to be genuinely pleasant to spend time around.

Daventry sits nearby, which is useful for supplies and lunch stops. If you're based at one of the glamping sites in the area - Coleman's Hill Campsite, EWE Glamping, or Hill Farm Glamping are all within easy reach - the canal makes for a cracking morning or afternoon activity that won't wreck the budget. Families with young kids will get a solid hour or two out of spotting wildlife and watching the boats. Walking types can extend the route significantly depending on which direction you head. History buffs might find themselves lingering longer than expected, reading the old lock markers and imagining the industrial traffic that once passed through here. Go on a weekday morning if you want it quieter. Weekends bring more people, but rarely crowds.
