The Broback

The walk up Broback is a solid afternoon out from Huntly - nothing spectacular, but you'll feel like you've earned a proper viewpoint by the time you reach the summit. It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble, which means families with older kids and regular hikers will both get something out of it without needing crampons or a rope.

From the top you get decent views across Aberdeenshire, though I'll be honest - on a cloudy day it's mostly just heather and sky. Go when the weather's cooperating and you can see across to wider Highland country. The walk itself takes a couple of hours there and back depending on your pace, and the path is clear enough that you won't spend ages navigating.

If you're staying at Huntly Castle Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a good escape from caravan life without committing to a full day. You could knock it off before lunch or use it as an evening walk when the light's decent. Proper Aberdeenshire hill walking - nothing fancy, just straightforward and worth doing if you're in the area. Free, of course, like most Scottish hill walks.
