The Bomb and the Football

Two objects sit behind glass in Stirling's Town Hall - a German bomb and a leather football from 1888. That's it. No grand narrative, no interactive screens, just two things that tell you something about this place if you're willing to look properly.

The bomb fell during World War II and didn't detonate. The football is from Stirling FC's earliest days. Together they're a bit of local stubbornness - war didn't flatten Stirling the way it did other towns, and the football club just kept going. It's the sort of exhibition that rewards actual attention rather than rushing through.

Historically minded visitors will get more from this than casual browsers. If you're already in Stirling exploring the castle or the National Wallace Monument, it's worth a quick detour into the Town Hall. Don't expect Tate Modern. This is municipal history delivered straightforwardly, which has its own charm.

Allow twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're reading everything properly. Best visited during normal town centre hours - opening times can be a bit vague, so check ahead. Free entry, which means there's no excuse not to pop in.

If you're staying at Witches Craig Caravan & Camping Park nearby, it's a ten-minute drive into central Stirling. The bomb and football work well as part of a broader half-day exploring the town's medieval streets and monuments rather than as a standalone draw.
