The Bin

The Bin is a proper Scottish hill walk that sits just outside Huntly, rising sharply from the surrounding farmland with views that stretch across Aberdeenshire in every direction. It's not particularly high - around 600 metres - but the ascent is steep enough to earn your breath and the reward once you're up there.

What you get is moorland underfoot, wind in your face, and if the weather's cooperating, sight lines that take in the Highlands rolling away to the north. The walk takes the better part of two hours up and down, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the summit. There's a cairn marking the top, naturally.

This is walker territory rather than casual rambler stuff. Bring decent boots because it can be boggy lower down, and check the weather before you set out - cloud cover rolls in quickly up here. The peak itself is exposed, so wind is something to reckon with even on supposedly calm days.

For a base, Huntly Castle Holiday Park sits just a couple of miles away and makes sense if you're after accommodation while exploring this corner of Aberdeenshire. The town itself has cafes and shops, though nothing fancy. The real appeal is being out on the hills themselves, and The Bin gives you decent views without requiring mountaineering skills or a full day's commitment. Families with teenage kids who can handle a proper hike will manage fine. Younger children might find the steepness frustrating.
