The Balvenie Distillery

The Balvenie sits just outside Keith in Speyside, and it's one of those distilleries that actually lets you see how whisky gets made rather than just herding you through a gift shop. The tour takes you through the malting floors where they still turn barley by hand - proper old-school stuff - and then you watch the whole process unfold: fermentation, distillation, the lot. You get a dram at the end, naturally.

It's worth allowing a good two hours, maybe three if you're into the technical side. The grounds are pleasant enough, and the whole operation feels genuine rather than tarted up for tourists. Families will find it interesting but it's not a day-long activity unless you're really keen on distillery tours. History types and whisky enthusiasts will get far more from it than casual drinkers.

If you're staying at Hillside Havens just up the road, it's an easy stop-off. The park itself sits near excellent walking country, so you could combine a morning tour with an afternoon on the Speyside Way or exploring the glens. Keith's a small town but functional for supplies and a decent pub lunch. Check ahead for tour availability and booking - they don't always run daily, and during peak season you'll want to book in advance rather than turning up on spec.
