The B V M & St. Leodegarius Church

The church in Daventry is one of those places you walk past half a dozen times before actually stepping inside - and then you wonder why you left it so long. St. Leodegarius is substantial, the sort of building that anchors a town, with serious medieval bones and enough architectural detail to keep you occupied for a good hour if you're into that sort of thing.

Inside, the space opens up properly. There's decent stained glass, some genuinely interesting monuments, and that particular smell of old stone and hymn books that feels proper England. The chancel's the real draw - worth taking time over the carvings and the woodwork. History buffs will find plenty to poke around; families might manage twenty minutes before the kids get restless, though if they're into spotting medieval gargoyles there's entertainment in the carved bits.

It's free to wander in, though opening hours aren't advertised anywhere useful - best call ahead or catch it during the day when it's likely unlocked. Allow an hour if you're actually paying attention, half that if you're just dipping in.

Daventry itself is compact enough that you could combine it with a walk round the town centre and a decent lunch without making a day of it.
