The Art House Sheffield

The Art House sits bang in the middle of Sheffield's cultural quarter, a proper converted Victorian building that's become something of a focal point for contemporary art. Inside, you'll find rotating exhibitions across multiple galleries - the sort of place where you might stumble into anything from photography to installation work, depending on what's on.

It's worth a couple of hours if you're already in the city centre, though I'd check their website first for what's actually showing. The building itself is handsome enough - all exposed brick and high ceilings - which counts for something even if the current exhibitions don't grab you. Not the sort of thing to drive across South Yorkshire specifically for, but absolutely worth ducking into if you're exploring Sheffield proper.

Art enthusiasts and anyone who fancies themselves a bit cultured will get the most from it. Families with older kids might find particular shows interesting, though it's not really a playground. Opening hours vary by exhibition, so do ring ahead before you go.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Wyming Brook Farm is excellent, incidentally, with proper five-star ratings - the Art House makes an easy half-day trip into the city. Fox Hagg Farm Campsite is also close by if you're after something a touch cheaper. Both give you a genuine countryside base while keeping Sheffield's attractions within easy reach.
