Tethered Cloud

You'll spot it from miles away - a massive tethered cloud sculpture hovering above the Kielder landscape like something between art installation and fever dream. It's the work of Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson, and it sits on the moorland near Hexham, commanding the sort of attention that makes you pull over and stare.

What you're actually looking at is a helium-filled sculpture, deliberately untethered to the earth in spirit if not in practice. It's genuinely strange and oddly moving - the kind of thing that photographs poorly but stays with you. There's no visitor centre or facilities around it; you simply show up, walk across the moor, and experience it. That's rather the point.

Historically minded types and contemporary art enthusiasts will get the most from this. Kids find it fascinating for a bit, though they'll want proper hiking or water activities to fill out a full day. It's not a destination unto itself - it's a detour worth taking if you're exploring the wider Kielder area.
