Ten Wood

Walking into Ten Wood feels like stepping into someone's back garden - the kind with proper old trees and enough space to actually breathe. It's a woodland patch east of Newmarket, nothing vast, but the sort of place that rewards a proper mooch about rather than a quick lap.

You'll find yourself on winding paths between mature woodland, with the occasional clearing where light filters through. It's dead quiet, which is half the appeal. Dog walkers clearly know about it, and families after a straightforward woodland walk will get a solid hour or so out of it without breaking a sweat. The ground can be muddy after rain - bring decent shoes.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, and admission appears free, which is always a bonus. It's the sort of place that works best in spring when there's actual life in the undergrowth, though autumn colours aren't bad either. Summer can feel a bit close and damp.

If you're staying at Piggles Retreat just down the road, Ten Wood makes an easy morning jaunt before heading elsewhere. It's not a full-day destination, mind you - perfectly honest about that. But as an add-on to a Cambridgeshire park holiday, especially if you're after quiet rather than spectacle, it delivers. Pair it with a proper walk at somewhere bigger nearby for a balanced few days.
