Telford Ski Centre

The artificial slope rises unexpectedly from the Shropshire landscape just outside Coalbrookdale, a proper full-sized ski run complete with drag lifts and real snow-making kit. You can actually ski or snowboard here year-round, which beats driving six hours to Scotland if you fancy a quick winter fix without the proper winter.

It's genuinely good for beginners wanting to learn without the expense of a Alps trip, and intermediate skiers can get useful practice runs in. The facilities are what you'd expect from a British dry slope centre - functional rather than fancy, but it works. Allowing two to three hours makes sense if you're taking a lesson; longer if you're hiring kit and getting proper tuition.

Families with kids keen on skiing will get real value here, though expect to pay lesson and lift fees on top of entry. It's the sort of place that transforms a school half-term into something genuinely different. Weather matters though - windy days can mean closures, so check before you head out.

If you're camping at Irongorge or Worfe nearby, it's a handy wet-weather alternative to yet another woodland walk. The drive from those sites takes barely ten minutes. Skip it on a bluebird day and you'll regret it; pick a grey Shropshire Tuesday and you've found gold. Not the Alpine experience, but honest and properly useful.
