Telford Millennium Nature Reserve

You'll find yourself walking through 180 acres of wetland and woodland just outside Coalbrookdale, where the old industrial landscape has been deliberately left to rewild. It's a proper transformation - the reserve was created on reclaimed colliery spoil, and now it's genuinely alive with birdwatchers' binoculars pointed at everything from kingfishers to various herons.

The main appeal here is simple: a decent walk through recovering ecosystem. There are marked trails threading through reed beds and past pools where you can actually spot something interesting if you go early. No fancy visitor centre or café nonsense. Just access to the paths and your own feet.

Families with kids aged six upwards will find enough to keep them engaged for two hours, especially if anyone's into spotting wildlife. Serious birders should budget three hours minimum - the wetland habitat pulls in rare visitors. The woodland sections offer decent walking for all abilities, though it does get muddy after rain.

Timing matters. Dawn or dusk is when you'll see the most movement. Winter floods parts of the reserve, which actually increases bird activity - frustrating if you're after the paths, brilliant if you just want to watch. Go on a weekday morning and you'll basically have it to yourself.

It works nicely as a leg-stretcher if you're camping at Irongorge or Ted's Farm nearby, though it's not a destination in itself. Worth the detour if you're in the Ironbridge area anyway.
