Teignhead Farm (Ruins)

The crumbling stone walls of Teignhead Farm emerge from the Devon countryside without warning - one moment you're walking through scrubland, the next you're standing in what feels like a proper ghost settlement. This is what remains of a medieval farmstead, its foundations and partial walls telling the story of people who lived and worked this land centuries ago.

What you actually get here is the satisfaction of amateur archaeology without the paperwork. The ruins are substantial enough to read the layout - you can make out where rooms stood, trace the old boundaries. It's the kind of place that appeals far more to history buffs and walkers than to families looking for a staged visitor experience. There's nothing curated about it, nothing signposted. Just fieldwork and imagination.

Allow an hour if you're taking proper photographs or really poking around the site. It's free to access, though you'll need to park sensibly and walk in from the surrounding paths near Exeter. The site works brilliantly as part of a longer ramble through the Devon landscape - combine it with a stay at Woodland Springs Touring Park five miles away and you've got a solid base for exploring both the ruins and the broader countryside.

Go in spring or early autumn when the light cuts across the stones properly and the fields aren't waterlogged. Summer's fine but busy with walkers, and winter can be boggy. Takes patience to find, but that's rather the point.
