Taste Garden

The Taste Garden near Lanark is a working kitchen garden where you can actually pick and eat your own produce straight from the beds. It's one of those places that sounds twee on paper but proves genuinely brilliant once you're there, especially if you've got kids who think vegetables arrive from supermarket shelves.

What you get is direct access to seasonal fruit, veg and herbs - strawberries, raspberries, salad leaves, tomatoes depending on when you visit. There's no pretence about it. You walk through, pick what's ripe, pay for what you've taken, and go. The garden itself isn't huge, so allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're pottering about with small children or someone's determined to have a good rummage through the herb section.

It works brilliantly as a half-day activity alongside a holiday at Ecosse Glamping, just four miles away - proper spot that one, if you're after proper rural South Lanarkshire. The garden is genuinely useful rather than just something to photograph. Real families with actual appetites will get more from it than Instagram tourists after one quick snap.

Timing matters here. Summer and early autumn are obviously when there's proper abundance. May through September gives you the full range. Spring and winter you might find it quieter or with fewer pickings, so check ahead if you're travelling in the quieter months. The whole thing feels less manicured than many garden attractions, which is exactly why it works.
