Tardow Hill

The walk up Tardow Hill takes about forty minutes if you're moderately fit, and the reward is a proper 360-degree view across the Dumfries & Galloway hills. It's not a dramatic peak - more a sturdy bump of moorland south-east of Stranraer - but on a clear day you can pick out the Irish coast and the fells rolling away to the east.

This is a walker's hill, not a tourist attraction with facilities or signs telling you what you're looking at. You'll want decent boots because the ground gets boggy, and the approach path isn't always obvious, but that's partly why it stays quiet. It takes about two hours door-to-door if you're based in Stranraer.

Families with young children might find it a slog for limited payoff; the gradient's relentless and there's no summit cafe or visitor centre. But serious hikers will appreciate the solitude and the real sense of being out in actual countryside rather than on a managed trail.
