Taranis Day

The Iron Age fort at Taranis Day sits just outside Milton Keynes, a proper slice of ancient Britain that most people driving past on the A5 haven't got a clue about. It's a defensive settlement from around 2,000 years ago, and what you're looking at is earthwork - banks and ditches that would have protected whoever lived here from raiders and rivals. The site itself is modest. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no fancy interpretation panels. Just the landscape and your imagination filling in the gaps.

History enthusiasts will find this genuinely worthwhile, especially if you're the type who gets a buzz from standing where Iron Age Britons actually stood. Families with younger kids might struggle - there's not much to do once you've walked the perimeter, maybe twenty minutes tops. Walkers connecting the surrounding paths will appreciate it as a waypoint rather than a destination.

It's free, naturally, and you can visit whenever you fancy - there are no gates or restrictions that I'm aware of. Allow perhaps half an hour if you're reading up on Iron Age settlement patterns, less if you're just passing through. The real appeal is combining it with the camping options nearby - Gullivers Campsite and Adventurer's Village are literally on the doorstep, while Cosgrove Park and The Old Dairy Farm offer slightly more breathing room if you want proper countryside feeling without being too far from Milton Keynes itself. Not a showstopper on its own, but a solid reason to slow down and look properly at the land around you.
