Tannachy Sands

The sand here stretches out in long, undulating lines, backed by low dunes and marram grass that gets hammered by the North Sea wind. Tannachy Sands, just outside Buckie, is the kind of beach that rewards a low-expectation visit - it's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but it's proper quiet and genuinely pleasant if you catch it right.

What you get is space. Lots of it. Families will appreciate how easy it is to let kids run without worrying about crowds, and dog walkers treat this place like their own private stretch. The sand is firm enough for a decent walk, the water's cold as you'd expect but manageable in summer, and there's genuine shelter from the dunes if the wind picks up.

There's nothing fancy here - no facilities to speak of, no lifeguards, no beach huts. This is genuinely wild coastline, which means you're free but also responsible. Low tide reveals more sand and the occasional rock pool worth investigating. High tide can swallow most of the beach, so timing matters.

If you're staying at Greencraig Pods up the road, this is an easy 15-minute drive for a wind-in-your-face walk and some proper sea air. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of an Aberdeenshire coast crawl - Buckie's harbour is worth an hour, Cullen has better ice cream - it's worth the stop. Allow 90 minutes if you're serious about exploring, less if you just want to stretch your legs.
