Swyre Head

The walk up Swyre Head rewards you with one of those views that makes the climb worthwhile - a proper panorama across the Purbeck Hills and out towards the coast if visibility is kind. It's a modest peak by serious mountain standards, but don't let that fool you. The ridge walk here is excellent, with enough elevation to feel like you've earned your legs aching and your thighs burning.

You're looking at a good two to three hours depending on your fitness and whether you faff about taking photos at the top (which, let's be honest, everyone does). The path from Wareham heads up through open moorland and heathland - it's exposed, so wind can be a factor, and in summer the sun reflects off the bare slopes relentlessly. Bring water. Locals do this walk as a quick weekend outing, and it attracts serious walkers tackling the longer Purbeck Way routes.

Historically minded types will appreciate that you're walking through an area riddled with Bronze Age barrows and Iron Age forts, though the summits themselves are just hillside and gorse. Children will manage it fine if they're used to walking, but younger ones might find the exposed moorland a bit boring compared to woodland trails.

If you're camped at Woodyhyde or Norden Farm nearby - both a couple of miles away - this works perfectly as a morning or afternoon walk. The weather can turn quickly on these southern ridges, so check the forecast before heading out. Free to access, no facilities at the peak itself.
