Swiss Valley Cave

The entrance to Swiss Valley Cave sits tucked into woodland near Bristol, and it's genuinely one of those places you'll miss if you're not looking properly. It's a proper cave - nothing fancy, nothing commercialised - just the real thing with a low opening that demands you crouch to get inside. Once you're through, the passage opens up enough to stand, though you'll want a decent torch because it gets dark fast.

This isn't a tourist trap with coloured lights and a gift shop. The cave itself is modest in scale but atmospheric, with damp stone walls and the kind of silence that makes you aware of being underground. It's managed by a caving club, which tells you this is the genuine article rather than a tarted-up attraction. You'll need to sort access beforehand - it's not a walk-up situation - and bring proper kit if you're serious about exploring deeper.

Walkers and cavers will get the most from it. Kids might find the initial descent exciting, but patience wears thin if they're expecting Wookey Hole-style spectacle. Allow an hour if you're just poking around the main chamber, longer if you're going further in. It's free, or donation-based depending on how you access it.
