Swinford Toll Bridge

The iron bridge spanning the River Thames at Swinford, just south of Oxford, is one of England's oldest working toll bridges - and yes, you still pay to cross it. Built in 1769, it's a proper Grade I listed structure with a cast-iron arch that's genuinely elegant, especially from the towpath where the afternoon light catches it just right.

What strikes you first is how small it feels compared to what you'd expect from something this historically significant. The toll house sits at the north end, and you can watch cars queue up to pay their few quid - it's theatrical in a very English way. Walkers and cyclists cross free, which makes it popular with the Oxford-to-Godstow crowd doing the Thames Path. The views upriver and down are lovely, particularly on a clear morning when the water's calm and you can see right across the meadows.

Historically minded types will find the Georgian engineering interesting, but honestly, unless you're already walking the Thames Path or exploring the Godstow area, it's not worth a special trip. The real value is in pausing here during a longer riverside walk. Most people allow ten minutes - maybe twenty if you want to sit and sketch it or take proper photographs.

If you're based at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Cotswold Edge near Ducklington, this makes an easy morning walk from camp. Combine it with a pint at the Trout Inn nearby and you've got a proper half-day sorted.
